• I use my computer as my tv most of the time so it's hooked up via hdmi under my tv and now I can sit on the couch and control my computer. I paid for the app because it said that I would get more options but I'm not sure what more it does. I don't care all that much though because it's a great app!!!

Or, you can often use a 'virtual USB' driver on the upstairs PC, but there are tradeoffs - but basically, the upstairs PC takes care of the 'Eth->USB' part, using a device driver... the caveat being the device driver needs to be up and running (along with the PC's entire network stack) for it to work.

OR, use something like Synergy+ (keyboard/mouse redirector) with a long-haul video splitter. This is basically how I do all of my machines, granted they're all within three feet of each other - but the concept will work over any distance, provided the monitor cable will reach.
